Dr Michael Tong has over 15 years’ experience as an orthopaedic surgeon on the Gold Coast. He performs a number of different surgeries, but has a special interest in knee and hip replacement surgery, along with knee arthroscope and ACL reconstruction. He uses computer navigation in joint replacement and also performs robotic joint replacement surgery.
The Australian Orthopaedic Association National Joint Replacement Registry results show that if Dr Tong performs your joint replacement it is up to 4 times less likely to fail, i.e., require revision. (1) This is extremely relevant as most first joint replacements will be better than subsequent revision replacement surgery. This is why it is so important to get it right the first time.
Sports and Orthopaedic Physiotherapy is now available in Dr Tong's rooms. The ability to provide physiotherapy services within Dr Tong's rooms means patients can often coordinate seeing Dr Tong and the Physiotherapist in the one visit. As well as being convenient, by liaising with Dr Tong, any concerns of the patient not dealt with by physiotherapy during treatment can quickly be discussed / reviewed by Dr Tong.
1: The National Joint Replacement Registry (NJRR) keeps data on joint replacement surgery in Australia. They record the failure (revision rates) for joints and individual surgeons. National average revision rates are publicly available, however results for individual surgeons are private at present. Revision rates of surgeons with less than 5 years of results are fairly meaningless as sufficient time has not elapsed to start to see failures.
